Eye Exams

The comprehensive eye exams at Winston Eye and Vision Center are second to none. Along with a crystal clear eyeglass prescription, your eye exam includes a detailed eye health examination. Regular comprehensive eye exams also check for dry eye, eye allergies, cataracts, macular degeneration and glaucoma.

We also offer the Optos for patients who enjoy the convenience of not being dilated. Optos gives a 200° panoramic picture of the retina and allows our doctors to show you the back of your eyes. These pictures are part of your record at Winston Eye and will be compared to future Optos taken for any subtle changes. Optos is a great option for annual eye exams.

Do you like the way your glasses look on your nightstand rather than your face? Then a contact lens fitting may be for you! Our contact lens fitting includes a trial pair of the lenses and a follow-up visit to ensure the lenses are fitting properly and meeting your visual needs.

Never worn contact lenses before? No problem. Our contact lens specialist will train you on the basics of application and removal of a contact lens in-office. We also cater to the "hard-to-fit" contact lens patient; whether it is astigmatism, the need for a multifocal, or a disease process like keratoconus, our doctors have the experience to know what will work best for you.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) & Optilight Treatment

Winston Eye and Vision Center is pleased to offer Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)/OptiLIGHT treatment for dry eye with the LUMENIS IPL device. LUMENIS IPL device is the only FDA-approved therapy for treating dry eye. OptiLIGHT by Lumenis is a non-invasive procedure—safe, gentle, and effective treatment for managing dry eye disease.

This device uses intense pulsed light to help get rid of the inflammation in your meibomian glands, oil glands that are crucial to tear production. Targeting the chromophores in your eyelids to reduce this inflammation is one of the best ways, if not the best, to address meibomian gland dysfunction and dry eye.

OptiLight uses pulses of light precisely administered in a 10–15 minute procedure. Targeting the area below the eyes, IPL uses heat to target the glands and enhance collagen production and blood circulation.

This procedure can relieve dry eye symptoms by:

  • Decreasing inflammation 

  • Increasing tear break-up time 

  • Reducing the amount of Demodex mites and bacteria around the eyes 

  • Improving the function of the meibomian gland

  • If you are suffering from dry eye disease, you may notice one or more of the following symptoms:  

    • A burning or scratchy sensation in your eyes  

    • Stringy mucus in or around your eyes  

    • Irritated or overly watery eyes  

    • Sensitivity to light (photophobia)

Pediatric Care with InfantSEE®

Pediatric Eye Care is something new to our practice. Dr. Sam Winston and Dr. Blake Rust are InfantSEE® providers, which gives infants (ages 6-12 months) a one time no cost eye exam helping infants to establish a lifetime of healthy vision. InfantSEE®, a public health program, managed by Optometry Cares® - The AOA Foundation, is designed to ensure that eye and vision care becomes an integral part of infant wellness care to improve a child's quality of life. Under this program, AOA optometrists provide a comprehensive eye and vision assessments for infants within the first year of life regardless of a family's income or access to insurance coverage.

An InfantSEE® exam is a great start, but if your child is older, then Dr. Winston and Dr. Rust recommend starting pediatric wellness exams at age 3 with another wellness eye exam before the child starts school. These exams are likely to be covered by your insurance.

The symptoms are familiar to most of us: blurry or double vision; red, dry eyes; neck and back pain; dizziness. And, most of all, headaches, even debilitating migraines.

Eye misalignment could be the reason. Neurolens could be the solution.

Modern life requires more and more time looking at screens—an average of eight hours a day for most American adults and as much as 10 hours for children. Our digital lifestyles mean that we sit for hours each day with our eyes engaged to focus on screens in ways that trigger pain receptors in the eye muscles and cause our eyes to become misaligned. 

Those eye muscles are connected to the trigeminal nerve in the brain, which can allow the pain to radiate to other areas, causing headaches, migraines and pain in the neck and shoulders.

In a 2022 study by The Vision Council, 80 percent of patients reported regularly experiencing these symptoms. That means that we need more from our eye glasses than simple vision correction. We need a way to correct the eye misalignment that leads to headaches, blurry vision and more.

  • First, you answer a simple questionnaire to identify symptoms. Then you receive an accurate measure of your eye alignment using the N3 machine in our office. This cutting-edge computer system measure the alignment of your eyes in multiple positions. Finally, you get a prescription for  contoured prism technology lenses that can bring your eyes back into proper alignment.

    Your Neurolenses automatically change as you move your eyes, giving you relief wherever you focus.

Treatment Services

Treatment of Acute Eye Infections & Injury

  • "Pink eye" is the most common infection, also called conjunctivitis. Your eye doctor will determine which type of pink eye you have and put you on the appropriate medication. Pink eye can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or allergies. Contact lenses may make pink eye worse so please do not wear them if your eyes are red. Drs. Winston and Rust will quickly establish a diagnosis and treatment plan for your red eyes.

  • Eye pain is very general and can be caused by many factors. Pain in and around the eye is a reason to see Drs. Winston or Rust sooner rather than later. We can find the underlying cause of the eye pain and treat it in most cases.

  • Flashes of light, or those pesky floaters, are important indicators of changes happening in the back of your eye. If you see flashes of light, new floaters, or a veil or curtain over your vision, it's time to see Dr. Winston or Rust. A dilated exam of the retina is the only way to rule out retinal detachment.

  • Contact lenses are wonderful medical devices that allow many people to be not so dependent on their glasses. However, they can cause eye infections similar to pink eye. We see many of these cases when the contacts have been over-worn or new patients who were improperly fitted. Many patients will need to be out of their contact lenses for a week and put on the appropriate medication for the particular conjunctivitis that was acquired.

  • Eye injuries or trauma happen more often than they should, but accidents do happen. Please wear eye protection while string trimming, grinding metal or playing raquetball. Drs. Winston or Rust will treat the injury and educate you on future prevention.

Eye Diseases

Management of Chronic Eye Disease

  • Dry Eye is a common complaint from patients. Please let us know if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms: dryness, pain, grittiness, or blurry vision that improves with blinking. Any one of these symptoms could be explained by dry eye. We have special procedures that we can do in office to assess your dryness and treat it appropriately to reduce your symptoms.

  • Macular degeneration is a disease process that destroys the central vision. There are two types of macular degeneration: dry and wet. The dry form slowly destroys the macula and, depending on the degree of vision loss, supplements may be suggested by Drs. Winston and Rust to slow the progression of the disease. The wet form of the disease, characterized by bleeding in the back of the eye, can take away a patients vision very quickly. Our newest piece of equipment, the Cirrus OCT, helps the doctors at Winston Eye and Vision Center diagnose and manage macular degeneration like never before. If you are in your fifties or older, caucasian, a smoker, or have a family history of macular degeneration, then you could be at risk for developing the disease.

  • Cataracts initially cause blurry vision, significant changes in your glasses prescription, difficulty driving at night, and the need for more light to read. Severe cataracts cause blindness. They should be removed by a skilled surgeon before they becomes severe. As your primary eye care provider, we will walk you through the surgery process and the different lens options available if you want to be less dependent on glasses post-surgery.

  • Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve that is characterized by slow destruction of the nerve. Each patient is screened for high eye pressure, which may lead to glaucoma, and the optic nerve is evaluated during each annual comprehensive eye exam. Unlike macular degeneration, the peripheral vision is the first to be affected in glaucoma. The patient is asymptomatic during this time, so annual eye exams and early diagnosis are key to the prevention of blindness. The Cirrus OCT is a state-of-the-art analyzer of the optic nerve and helps Drs. Winston and Rust diagnose and manage glaucoma better than ever before. Risk factors for glaucoma include: high eye pressure, 60 years of age or older, African American genetic heritage, and a family history of glaucoma.
